Happy Thanksgiving, First Split Wrap Up!

The Thanksgiving holiday found us welcoming guests from Arizona, San Antonio, and as far away as New York as Ted G. and sons (attending the Army Militarty Academy at Westpoint) joined us. Hunting and fishing with many of the same groups over the holiday is a tradition that dates back nearly 20 years.  One thing you can always count on is some hard weather over the holiday and great hunting and fishing.  This year was no exception as a strong cold front hit the coast Thursday evening.  Our guests were taking strong limits on waterfowl hunts with Capt. Jake, Capt. James and myself having the honors.  While fishing took a back burner Friday in the hard blow, the cold front eased up big time on Saturday which found guests taking half limits on puddle ducks but Redfish action went ballistic.  Water levels rebounded on the high side as the front didn't seem to move much water out of the bays.  Ted G. and family had opportunities at limits on waterfowl Saturday morning and then headed out for a great afternoon taking full limits of Redfish to 25".  I was really surprised to see the number of people fishing Saturday and from the looks of things at the cleaning table there weren't too many disappointed.

Well, that's a wrap up for the first split of duck season here on the middle Texas Gulf Coast.  The Second Split starts December 11th and we will be welcoming guests from central Texas to as far away as New York State; Florida; and the Carolinas.  We hope everyone had a great holiday and want to thank all of our guests.

Happy Holidays

Great weather and great fishing over the last week with full limits coming on Redfishing trips in the back marsh for Chris M. and guest along with Jerry B. and guests.  Water was down and out early week and it was pretty mild, warming, and a lot of stretches of gin clear water.  Anglers had just enough wind to get on them and stay on them.  Size has been running 20 to 24" with larger fishing coming mid-morning.

Cast N Blast trips have managed better than half limits to full limits with afternoon fishing better for some than others.  Chad H. and guest managed 1/2 limits of Trout working with me over mud/shell while the Brandon H. group had fits with upper bay Redfish with Capt. James.  Capt. Jake hit it out of the park with the Barret G. party taking limits of Specklebellies; a dozen Snows; and 8 ducks including Mottled Ducks & Wigeon on a combo shoot Friday.  Hunts over the weekend managed full to near limits of Puddlers with limits of Pintails; Gadwall; Wigeon & Teal with the cool front playing a definate roll in heavy straps.

With heavy weather starting to hammer the upper Midwest, we should be gaining more and more birds and we move toward Thanksgiving.

The first week of duck season flew by with plenty of birds here on the Gulf Coast.  The cold front mid-week moved a lot of water out of the bays temporarily making outside beaches and shorelines along Matagorda Island the place to be.  Redheads are showing up in good numbers along with Pintail, Wigeon, Gadwall, Shoveler, and a few Teal.  We have been managing limits to near limits and it looks like there is going to be plenty of food to keep the birds interested and frequenting a number of locations.  On the inland side Capt. Jake has had great success inland with limits as well on puddle ducks and a few divers.  We've got alot of geese down early, specklebellies along with more and more Snows are showing up.  We've had a number of hunts taking limits of Specks along with a few Snows already.

Redfish action continues strong with Capt. Doug taking full limits for the Luke K. group Saturday.  The boys enjoyed a near limit shoot on ducks with slick "blue-bird" conditions followed by strong action on Redfish and full limits to 26". Capt. James reported solid action on Trout wade fishing with artificial lures early in the week working windward shorelines in off color water.

Have a great week and come see us!

Kris,

Thank you for calling to check on us. Eric was home by about 10PM last night and I made it home about 1PM today. It was well worth the 600 miles each way to get to fish with you. We had a wonderful time - the fishing was great, the accommodations were excellent, and the food was out

I have hunted the Louisiana coast my whole life and I am always the one that runs the trolling motor and nets the fish and does the duck calling when I hunt or fish. I just want to say even if you have your own place you really owe it to yourself to come down and spend some time with Ms. Wendi and D

Kris and Wendy,

Thanks for an awesome weekend! My dad, brother, and I really enjoyed ourselves. Dinner was superb on Fri night (cookies were delicious), the accommodations were clean and super-comfy, and of course the fishing on Saturday was excellent. I'm real glad we made it down there
