The Fall Crescendo

The Fall Crescendo

Redfish action is coming on strong as predicted already here approaching September. Capt. Steve Boldt reported quick Redfish action on mid to upper slot Redfish yesterday. “I pulled up tight to a grass line in Mission Bay and the bottom erupted with mud-boils and jockeying fish”. Capt. Jake Huddleston is fishing as we speak and it looks like one of those special days for Trout in Lavaca Bay, check out this bruiser in the picture below, sweet! We’ll start shifting gears here shortly focusing more on artificial lures engaging both Trout and Redfish as bait brood stocks start migrating for the Gulf. While “targeting birds” was a thing of the past in this area, we saw a huge resurgence last Fall-Winter and I’m expecting this strategy to payoff big again this Fall. Look for birds working in and around shell reefs and work the groups shallower first. The same would apply for mud/grass environs as well. The shallower birds working closer to shorelines seem to have better fish. Commonly, smaller Trout and Redfish will be working at the heart of the bird activity with larger fish seemingly on the outskirts.

Airboat Redfishing

To be sure, airboat Redfishing is on the horizon and probably sooner than later. Water levels have been holding at higher levels of late and that is setting the stage for some memorable drag burning action in the skinny waters of their back lakes environs. The neat thing about airboating for Redfish is it’s an experience in and of itself. Our guests experience “a look at fishing that you just won’t see any other way”.

Port O/Seadrift Teal & Dove Report

In what seems like an instant, we are already feeling the transition to a spectacular Fall. Hummingbirds buzzing the landscaping at The Lodge are a sure sign that things are on the move and a September to remember is in the works for us. Teal are working inland marsh and flooded rice en-mass. A lot of big ducks are already showing as well. Dove are congregated and working milo, corn, fallow, and plowed ground fields holding close to available water. We have been steadily picking up more and more White-wing in the area and I was excited to see a good 30-50 bird flight heading out of the City of Seadrift yesterday to feed nearby. This isn’t White-wing country but like so many other parts of the State, we are getting more and more of them.

Tying it all together is Castaway Lodge, your home away from home and backdrop for a memorable experience. The Lodge features Wendi’s home cooking, comfortable accommodations and relaxation areas, convenient to everything in Seadrift, and perfectly positioned access to the bays and inland venues. We offer combination trips “package priced” with hunting for Teal and Dove, fishing, lodging & meals for $400 per person, weekday and exclusive lodge pricing is available. Contact us so we can custom tailor a trip experiencing the best the Texas Gulf Coast has to offer. The window between September 10th and 30th is the time to take an Alligator while you are at it. Gator prices start at as little as $650 for an 8’ lizard with them pushing to 11’ commonly and larger. We are currently booked on Gator hunts from the 10th through the 14th.

If you’ve got a house and a boat in Port O, contact us for “hunt only” pricing for Dove, Teal, and Alligator.

I don’t think anyone in Texas wouldn’t welcome the changing of the season as we head into Fall. Hopefully some rain will fall for us along the coast and the cooler temperatures make this a special time of year. Join us while we forge memories of a lifetime.
