Back Lakes Cruisers, SAB Trout Smoke N Roll!

Big Water Trout & Redfish

Trout fishing was much improved late week moving into the weekend thanks to winds settling out. Shell tapers in 3-5’ of water produced best but no until around 10:00am. We had multiple boats on the water most days and the “early story” looked pretty much the same, slow. As we approached the “brunch hour” things picked up and structure looked at early that didn’t produce “turned on”.  As things began to settle out Wednesday afternoon, Ronny D. and son Cooper from Houston hit Trout limits to 22”. Hitting it again Friday yielded the same results with full limits coming around 11:00am. Capt. Steve Boldt picked up a strong Redfish bite over shell in SAB with the Danny A. party and managed a decent showing on Trout as well. Capt. James Cunningham worked up near limits of Trout and some solid Redfish also.

Take a kid fishing would be the motto behind the Speedy Stop Kids Fishing Day. Our own Capt’s Brad Graham and Capt. James Cunningham participated and everyone had a great time. Our Captains would like to thank the very gracious Mr. Cliff Thomas of Thomas Fuels for such a well organized event highlighting our youth!

Back Lakes Airboat Redfishing

I picked up our new Air Ranger 20 x 8 airboat last week and can’t say enough about the company or the boat. I didn’t need a whole lot of encouragement to put it on the water!

You would think at 8 months pregnant that fishing would just about be out of the question. Well not for Amanda and her husband Brad from Austin. The staff at The Lodge took great care of her while fishing with us over the weekend. Capt. Steve Boldt warmed them up with some Trout and Flounder Saturday and she put in a solid effort. I broke out the new Air Ranger airboat and took them on a back lakes adventure Sunday for some drag burning Redfish.

Of special note, there doesn’t seem to be much grass in the back lakes visited. Apparently our hyper salinity is knocking it back considerably. No need for alarm, it’s still there just not in the huge mats we are accustomed to seeing. With more widespread mud pockets and better defined grass lines, I think the back lakes are going to start yielding much improved “fish-ability” and some excellent catches as we move into Fall.

We didn’t set the world on fire in our impromptu visit but we did manage half limits to 22” and the expecting couple had an experience of a lifetime.

Flounder Gigging

Capt. James Cunningham took Shane H. and his wife Michelle gigging Friday night and reported slower action than he’d seen lately. The tide has come back up and the guests put in a solid effort with the fish never hitting the beach in any significant numbers. They did manage 7 solid slabs for the effort.

Cast & Blast, Dove & Teal, Gators

Capt. Jake Huddleston has pretty much laid our water out for the upcoming Teal Season and we should be seeing their arrival shortly approaching September. Dove concentrations remain unusually high for us with drought conditions concentrating the birds near available water. Jake said I’ve got my eye on some really nice Gators and no one tracks them like Jake. We are pretty much booked for the first five days of the season starting on September 10th . We’ve got openings 9/14 through the 17th and 9/21 through the end of Gator and Teal Season 9/27 and 9/30 respectively.

At Castaway Lodge, you’ll always be treated like a BIG FISH in a little pond! Come see us.
