Big Rains & September Adjustments

Castaway Lodge Seadrift Report
By Capt. Kris Kelley

Sponsored by: Mercury Marine; Air Ranger Airboats; Haynie Bay Boats; Baysport Marine Victoria; Castaway Rods; JL Marine; Pure Fishing; and, Bob's Machine Shop.

Highlights

Trout to 28"; alligators to 12'2"; Teal Report; new airboat; new layout boats; new mudroom.

Fishing Scene

We've switched from working mud pockets and shorelines to fishing cattle trails; hog paths; and Alligator slide pockets and any other depressions in brushy shorelines and cattle pastures. To say the tide is elevated would not quite cover it. While the mild cool front relocated some water briefly, it came rushing back and the fish have been pretty scattered. This isn't uncommon given the conditions and we should see more water movement hopefully as winds begin to shift predominantly to a northerly direction. Solid Redfish have worked themselves into the wood work with solid fish being taken including a nice trout at 28" released by Capt. Chris Cady the other day.

Alligators

Massive amounts of rainfall put a damper on the alligator hunting in concert with this cooler temperatures the last few days; overcast; and rain. That's always a potential problem with these animals and that has proved to be the case of late. Things are warming up today, however, and that's a sure to put a twist in their feeding habits. We've been taking them from the high 7' mark all the way into the 12'.

I'm hoping the back half of the season may offer better opporutities and a strong finish if we can keep the temperatures up and slow the rain down a little.

Teal Hunting

Quick limits for some and light straps for others amid scattered results and a lot of water standing in the fields. The day before the opener we picked up 4-5" of rain; the night of the opener we picked up another several inches. That can give the birds lots of options besides cupping in on the blocks and we'd like to see those flooded areas drain off a bit heading into the mid-point of the season. There's no doubt the migration and season timing are just about perfect.

Lodge News - Duck Intensive

We've got a new mud room and gear staging area for the upcoming season. That's going to make a world of difference in comfort on the preperation scene. We continue to narrow down the wish list of things to make everyone more comfortable. To that end, we'd like to introduce everyone to a Texas version of a Yankee gunning platform. We welcomed 4 new Aquapods in today and would like to shout our to the Attbar division of Ehrshigs for getting them to us quickly and in perfect condition. Our dedication to the perfection; art; and, approach of this form of waterfowling continues.

This is how we roll with these rigs

We will also be adding another 20' Air Ranger to the roster for this season and look forward to a great duck season. When you get a chance, we'd love to have you, come see us!
