Castaway Lodge Seadrift Report

20th Second Split Opener
Lots of excitement heading into the second split opener of the Texas Duck Season over the weekend. Young guns hunting with their dads; some for the first time; family and friends; all experienced the best of the Texas Gulf Coast on Saturday. We welcomed guests from as far away as Lubbock and Midland to a mixed bag of puddle ducks and divers cupped and commited over the blocks. Teal, Mottled Ducks, Pintail, Blue Bill, Redheads, Shoveler, and even some Golden Eye fell to the guns.
Waterfowl Outlook
With a significant dip in the freeze line mid-continent, we're missing some ducks and looking to add more Pintail and puddlers. Pintail are noticeably absent at this point and I'm not sure exactly how much more weather we need to tell the story. With my feelings that our duck season essentially started around Thanksgiving, I feel we are more or less in the 2nd Inning, at least thats our hope. What we don't want to find out is we are really in overtime, already. The score will play out over time so stay tuned.
Goose hunting mid-split proved worthwhile and we continue to see reasonable numbers here in the county. Weather was brutal and our guests were definately the "frozen chosen" over that stretch. We'll continue to take advantage of weather and strong feeding locations for hunts moving forward as they arise.
The Fishing Scene
The weather was pretty mild on Saturday morning with the strong NW winds pushing in mid-day. That led to a solid bite on Black Drum for Cast & Blast guests to 40". Fishing continued upbeat into Sunday with guests taking near limits of Black Drum as well. Redfish have been noticeably absent lately but I was encouraged to hear a report from one of our up and comers that he stumbled into a big school of Redfish and mixed Drum late Sunday afternoon.
