Redfish Backed Securities, Trout Default Swaps

Thursday

Winds pushing 20 knots were no problem for Kubco Centrifuge of Houston as Day 1 of a three day trip yielded full limits of Redfish along with a bonus of Black Drum working bait over back Matagorda lakes.

Friday

Winds pushing 30 knots made for some challenges with Kubco and a major airconditioning company. Capt. James Cunningham dug in his heels to dig out limits for the crew on Redfish to 27 7/8’s. James worked Shoalwater and the Welders area to get the job done fishing bait over mud/grass and sand/grass potholes. As a result, the Lodge has been designated “the destination” for their inter-corporate rewards program. Kubco’s guests also managed full limits on Day 2 along with a smattering of solid slot Black Drum working the back country by airboat.

Saturday

While the weather forecast was daunting, the fishing managed to be rewarding and the weather turned out to be “more Weatherman drama than anything”. Kubco’s  guests strapped up some rain gear and did experience some brief showers. Solid Redfish to 31”  and Black Drum in the low 20’s were the reward for fighting it out and all managed full limits working bait over back lakes shorelines. The Lodge welcomed a large turbine manufacturer in the power plant industry for a four boat trip. Capt. James Cunningham and Capt. Terry Spoonmore busted out full limits working “near the ramp mud/grass and back marsh” to dig out Redfish to 25”. Capt. Jake’s crew elected to beat the rain with half limits of Redfish. I pushed off from the ramp last and was the odd man out with a couple of the cutest little girls and their dad. We struggled before dropping them off mid-morning at the ramp as the rain started. We headed back out with just the grown ups and it didn’t get any better after the weather broke.

Sunday

The turbine crew was back at it again and Capt. James Cunningham led the way with full limits of Redfish. Capt. Kris Kelley struggled on the huge tide push on the Island working up 7 slot Redfish to 27”; 7 Black Drum to 20”; and two oversized Redfish to 31”. Capt. Jake managed to pull off half limits of Redfish. Jake and I both made a push for Trout early but the North wind got on us pretty quick making it too rough. We both retreated for Redfish and I ended with a couple of Trout, two Redfish to 22”, and a “token Goat to make a little girls day”.

All in all it was brutal wind at times but everyone dug in their heels for a tremendously successful outing over the late week and weekend.

Come home when you can!
