Rimshots & Nothing But Net

Castaway Lodge Seadrift Report
By Capt. Kris Kelley

The thermometer is backing down a bit and it couldn't come fast enough. Coming up out of the livewell and seeing stars is getting to be a little too familiar feeling of late with little wind and temps pushing 108. Running and gunning hard while it's cool in the mornings is not a bad plan. Get to about 10:30 or so and even running the boat offers little cooling insofar as it's like turning on a hair dryer, nada on the relief scale. I'm running a little late this week on reports as I wasn't too impressed with our photo line-up. We're not having too many takers on the hanging board routine in the searing heat these days despite solid catches of both Trout and Redfish. Capt. James has been lighting them on fire with double lims coming at will. Capt. Jake reported solid catches coming out of the surf and today again yielded solid Trout and Redfish action over SAB proper shell and mud/shell.

It's hot out there no doubt, the fish can sense it. Working Redfish shallow finds a pretty rapid shut down as the sun eases up to about the 10'oclock position shortly after sunrise. We are super "salinated" at this point and you can see strange things in the bays these days like the Ling that Capt. Jake caught the other day. Today I saw a school of small Hammerhead sharks scooting under the water and my client swears he saw a Mahi Mahi jump right near the boat. I couldn't discount his sighting as I figure just about anything is possible these days.

We're loaded up here at the lodge over the big weekend and then it's pretty much a fast track to Gator Season which starts on September the 10th. We're booked up solid on the Lizards so it's going to be a "barn burner". September will mark some cool fronts coming down out of the North and they just can't get here fast enough. It's that time again, the changing of the seasons. We've got a lot of fishing left to do over September and October. Our new 20x8 Air Ranger should be here in couple of weeks and I'm excited about getting behind the stick again in the back country.

I'm sure you've probably seen the prognostications for rain late this week with an approaching Tropical event....I'll believe it when I see it for sure. I just saw the track forecast models on this thing and it doesn't look too promising. Keep your fingers crossed for some rain!

Below you will find our 2011 entry into the Mercury Film Festival. If you go to http://www.mercfilms.com you can register to "view and vote" on your favorite videos. Doing so will also put you in the running for some nice prizes from Mercury Marine. We'd certainly appreciate your support

We hope you have a great week, come see us!
